Ghana is a developing country in Africa and new to democracy. Even though they are way behind the times they are trying hard to catch up to the first world countries like France, Canada and the USA but still keep their individuality that make them special. They have many obstacles in their way stopping them from becoming a strong first world country like their education for one is poor and a little to slack causing problems for the people of the country to have a strong education. Also their police force is corrupted repressing the country from advancing because the cops have an easy life and want to keep what they have. And third their technologically far behind for example in their medical system they have nothing close to tools that we have in Canada they still manage to get by on what they have and that says a lot about the people themselves but there is no point of them not having access to things like MRI and CT scanners when they are out there. However one thing that the country of Ghana does have that not many other countries do have is the niceness of the people their. If you ask anyone that has gone their they almost all say that the people are extremely nice and it is unworldly of how willing they are to share what they have with you or even take an interest in you. Canadians are known for being really nice people around the world but I almost never have random people come up to me and just say hi to me and start-up a conversation. This is kind of sad for Canada, that even though we are a first world country that we live in houses that are not the size of a shack and have all these luxuries in life we are still not as nice and as friendly as the people from Ghana event though they have very little. If I had to share a house the size of my room with my whole family and have no internet i would be a very up set person but they are ok with that kind of living standards. It may be because it is what they are used to but none the less you have to applaud them for their positivism and hard work ethic. Like how many other struggling countries are there out there that are willing to help another country when they are having their own problems? not many but some how Ghana does that. And this is why countries like Canada need to help Ghana become a stronger country because it will not only help Ghana it will also help the countries around it. Even what the students from Kwantlen were doing is amazingly helpful. You teach a kid how to use the internet and the opportunities to learn new things is endless and it is such a simple act for someone like you or me to do but in affects them hugely. But a few things I was told to bring t Ghana if I ever go and I feel I should pass it on is Ipod speakers, and bed sheet and of course KD.
The Phantom of The Race: The Myth of Race and the Reality of Racism
20 OctRace is a labeling system that people use to describe a persons characteristics. It doesn’t alway have to be a negative thing some time it is just a way to describe a person. For example at my job we work on commotion and so some times the cashiers ask the customer who helped them. And one of the people I work with is black and i can’t count the number of times where the customer uses other characteristics like his hight, hair style, outfit, etc. But never say he is black they think we will think they are racist because he/she described him by his skin colour. Just because you describe the person by their race doesn’t make you resist. Kids are really known the I-part; blurting out a person’s skin colour or a disfigurement without thinking if it is socially acceptable. However kids kind of have the right idea with recognizing the different type of people. Now in days lots of people are too scared to say someones colour cause they think it might offend them. Like lets not be blind here I know you your of a different race then and you know it so what is the harm about saying it. It is like is I like rap and you like country it is something different about use but we are not scared about offending someone because of it. But racism is around because evilness is in our society and a persons visual characteristic can seem like a very good reason to not like somebody. Look at the KKK for example they hate everyone for no good reason not like all of them have been done wrong by any of the people they are hating on. They just find it to be the core reason to do so. But society I find now is way more accepting of different races then it use to. Lot of families are now of mixed race marriage. Like the U.S.A elected in there first black president not only four years ago even though they are a white majority country. The world is progressing in the area of race and soon we will all be this one weird mix colour.
Chapter 2 Body Ritual Among the Nacirema
19 SepIn the essay about the nacirema people they created this kind of belief or religion that shaped and controlled their whole lives. Since all these people were affected by it, it made this type of society that they are all apart of. The society that they started took on a life of its own and now the whole village is created and run by it and all the limitations it put on the people with in it. Since everyone that is born in this society is couched into this certain way of life, their is no safe way of a person trying to change it without getting in serious trouble with there society. It has so much power that the majority of the day these people spend doing ritual acts and ceremonies. They are limited by their own creation in what they can and can’t do, it takes away most of freedom that they other wise would have had. The weird thing about it is that it is not like a person standing over them and making sure that they do certain things. It is a fear put on them by society to do it and it is not a physical deterrent it is a mental deterrent that is super natural and undiscovered, but still with no real evidence it is still unchallenged because everyone finds it to be smarter to just blindly fallow. The weirdest and biggest show of this societies power is with the holy-mouth-man, and even after going to him and having to tolerate all that pain they still believe even though it does not prevent their teeth from decaying. Even though this seems to be a very isolated and non society we still are controlled by the ways of society it a first world county like Canada. It may not be to the same extreme of the holy-mouth-man but we still go pay money to churches, psychics and other supernatural support even when it does not really help the situation in any way. I have really learned how much really affects the people who live with in it. And it really makes you more aware when it is society affecting you or just self-limitation.
About Me!
7 SepMy name is Sean McCutcheon I am 19 years old and this is my first year in a post secondary school. I took a year off to think about what I really wanted to do with my life I ended up deciding on law enforcement career. I am taking a two-year criminology course at Kwantlen. I took sociology 1125-s50, because it is one of the 20 classes that I need to take. I also think it is a good class for me to further my education. I plan to use the diploma to help me get into the RCMP which is my career choice for the time being. Of course school is not everything about me. I have been working at Sport Chek since November 2007 the main reason I have been working there so long other than I need the money is that I get a great deal on all the stuff in the store, which brings up another important thing about me SPORTS! I love sports from tennis to hockey I will play anything and be good at it. My favorites few sports are hockey of course since I am Canadian, wakeboarding snowboarding and my newest hobbie kiteboarding. But the more intense the sport gets the more fun I have with it that is why I like snowboarding so much, you put me one a mountain with a fresh drop of powder and that is heaven on earth for me. All the endless ways of riding down the mountain you can take a cruzer and just mess around with friends all the way down doing butters slides and what ever else you want. Or my favorite pick the hard ways down and do 30 foot drops into chest powder and cut through trees and hope you don’t catch an edge or make a wrong turn. My favorite place to go is my cabin on the Sun Shine coast my favorite part about it is how everyone there is related. Because back in the day my great grandparents bot about 2 thirds of the bay so now every one there is my first second or third cousin and it is just a giant family get together every summer. So this is a bit about me and what I love.
